President's Day Weekend is our last big winter holiday, and is full of things to do at Deep Creek! The holiday weekend is usually a very popular time to visit, and many local businesses offer deals, host special events, and we have an extra day full of weekend fun! Here is a list of great ways to spend your holiday weekend if you are planning to visit!
Oakland Winter Fest
Celebrating our love for winter is something that comes easy to us, so we bottle up our favorite parts into one weekend to share it with you. Just a few minutes south of Deep Creek Lake, is Oakland, Maryland, home to Winter Fest! Take a walk down the brick sidewalks to view beautiful ice sculptures, or catch a carriage ride downtown in a horse-drawn sleigh. Enjoy the Wine Walk throughout town and tase approximately 12 different wines! There are also many new shops and museums to explore! Winter Fest has something for everyone, you don’t want to miss this special event!
Head to Wisp Resort
This Saturday is the BlackStrap Rail Jam in Central Park at Wisp! Watch skiers and snowboarders compete on new jumps! You will definitely see some cool aerial stunts and rail slides! Although Wisp is mostly known for skiing and snowboarding, there are also plenty of other winter activities for any age or skill level. They have excellent instructors for beginners and children! They also have fun tubing lanes, an ice skating rink, and the mountain coaster open year round! The best part about Wisp, is that they offer all of these features whether it is sunny or snowy out!
Hiking
One of the best ways to connect with the winter season is to take a hike! There are amazing state parks nearby Deep Creek that offer great hiking trails! Once you are out on the trails and catch some of the beautiful winter views Garrett County has to offer, you won’t even remember you’re cold. You will love the gorgeous waterfalls at Swallow Falls State Park. You can enjoy all levels of difficulty at one of the state parks, or join a guided tour that takes you off the beaten path. All Earth Eco Tours offers snowshoeing tours when there’s snow cover or standard hiking tours when there isn’t!
Live Music
Most of Deep Creek’s nightlife spots offer live entertainment on the weekends. Since President’s Day Weekend is a three-day weekend, you will most likely find bands Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights! On Friday night, you can catch Playing For Pennies at Sipside Lounge in Oakland, Bluegrass Wind at Wispers Bar & Grill at Wisp Resort, and Campfire Gypsies at the Honi Honi. On Saturday, during Winter Fest, enjoy a doubleheader of live music at Sipside Lounge, or listen to Undercover at the Honi Honi. And on Sunday, catch Channel Cats at the Honi Honi. Shopping
While there aren’t any shopping malls nearby, Deep Creek has lots of amazing local shops! Holiday weekends usually bring great sales, which is still true for our small town shops! Find winter sports gear at High Mountain Sports, and souvenirs at Bear Creek Traders and the Tourist Trap. Downtown Oakland also has many shops open during Winter Fest on Saturday!
