Besides the “I Love DCL” bumper stickers and ceramic bear figurines, the best souvenir to take home from your Deep Creek Lake vacation is a treasured photo album of scenic vistas and smiling faces. To help in this endeavor, we have compiled a list of the 7 Best Places to Take a Selfie at Deep Creek Lake.
Have you watched Deep Creek Lake lovers stand-up paddling (SUP) with their dogs aboard with envy? Sharing this outdoor adventure with our four-legged friends in the summer of ’16 seems like an achievable goal. We have dogs and decided to research the training methods used by successful paddlers prior to the beginning of the season to ensure that we were ready to hit the water when the temperature heats up.
Here is what we learned!
Like most of you, we were entertained by the SNL ‘Thanksgiving Miracle’ skit. Did you see it? The many generations were gathered around the bounty-filled table, dressed in their holiday finery when inevitably one of the members mentioned politics or religion, immediately offending another. It took the young daughter to divert the conversation by playing Adele’s new single ‘Hello,’ a song that everyone loves.
That’s right, Santa is coming to Deep Creek Lake! With such a busy holiday season, at the end of the year Santa needs a break, and what better place to kick up his feet and relax than Deep Creek Lake?
Between managing the elves and preparing the sleigh, Ole’ St. Nick doesn’t have time to plan his winter Deep Creek Lake vacation. so he has tasked our ‘deer’ friend, Railey Reindeer, to find the best places in the area to explore.
But how can one deer show ALL that Deep Creek Lake has to offer? That’s where you come in!
Early in the morning of September 14th and 15th on the shores of Deep Creek Lake, men and women will gather to face the grueling physical challenge of the SavageMan Triathlon. As the name suggests, this brutal race is not for the faint of heart. In fact, Triathlete Magazine named it the “hardest race on earth.”
As much as participants label this event as one of the most difficult triathlons, they also rave that the scenery is stunning through rolling hills of autumn color. Athletes begin with the swim in the crystal clear water at Deep Creek State Park, followed by the bike through the rolling hills of the rugged Mountains of Western Maryland. The final leg of the race leads runners on Deep Creek State Park trails and local lakeside roads.
There’s something inspiring about watching these determined athletes conquer geographical, physical and psychological challenges. Spectators cheer on the participants as they attempt to climb the famed Westernport Wall, the steepest climb in all of triathlon. Successful savages earn a personalized engraved brick laid in the wall – tantamount to triathlon immortality.
Event watchers can ride shuttles back and forth from the start/finish area to the celebratory Westernport Wall Block Party where rowdy crowds blow horns and ring cowbells to encourage the athletes through town. If you’re in the Deep Creek area in mid September, this event shouldn’t be missed. It’s truly an inspirational experience!
The Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation receives 100% of the net profits from the SavageMan Triathlon. As melanoma continues to threaten the lives of all outdoor sports enthusiasts, the SavageMan Triathlon proudly contributes to research, advocacy and education established to fight this life-threatening cancer.

Annual Garrett County Agriculture Fair begins this week
Tractor pulls, funnel cakes, arts & crafts. It’s that time of year again – the Garrett County Agriculture Fair starts on July 27th and runs through August 3rd. This highly anticipated summer tradition is a favorite among our Railey staff. From agriculture exhibits to evening concerts, this family fun event promises some classic county fair events along with a few others that are unique to Garrett County.
Dating back to 1917, the Garrett County Fair has been a long-standing tradition in our neck of the woods. Every year we look forward to heading down to the Fairgrounds, perusing the exhibits, sampling good eats, taking in a few events and socializing with old and new friends.
If you’re staying at one of our vacation rental homes in the Deep Creek area, be sure to head on over to the Fair. You can check out the Fair schedule online and tickets can be purchased at local retail stores. Here’s a rundown on some of our favorite events and shows:
- The Farm Queen & Court ceremony – the 68th Farm Queen will be crowned on July 28.
- Horse and tractor pulls – from the antique tractor pull to the horse pull, these events are a must see.
- Agriculture exhibits – watch and learn from 4H and Future Farmers of America.
- Horse Show – enjoy this amazing display of horsemanship sponsored by the Mt. Top Saddle Club.
- Home arts – from arts and crafts to photography and flower arranging, view a wide variety of amateur artists’ work.
- Mud Bog – experience some good clean fun where Street Legal, Super Stock, Modified and Super Modified swampers battle it out for best in class.
Food vendors serve up the usual fare, including hot dogs and funnels cakes. But try out a few of the more delectable dishes like pit beef sandwiches and taco salads. The evening concerts from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. promise fun musical entertainment for the whole family. Musical groups include The Fabulous Hubcaps, up and coming Country music singer Lindsey Erin and the Gospel Harmony Boys. The full concert schedule can be found on the Garrett County Agriculture Fair website.
