You are here

The leaves have fallen and flurries can be spotted flying through the air at Deep Creek. Fireplaces and hot tubs are a norm here at the lake when the snow covers the ground. Skiing tops the list of Deep Creek winter activities, whether you have a need for downhill speed or like to cross-country ski through the fields. Snowshoeing, tubing, ice fishing, and snowmobiling round out your winter wonderland experience. Plus, area hiking destinations, like Swallow Falls State Park, freeze over to become a magical destination for those who like to explore the winter wonderland.

Pack your wool socks and gloves, and dig in for a fun experience you won’t soon forget!

December

December brings cooler temps, snow, and the opening of Wisp Resort! Although the actual opening date of the slopes at Wisp is weather dependent, they are usually cranking out a lot of their own snow to get the slopes ready for the season. December also brings the holiday season, making it a great time to get away to the lake with loved ones. Christmas and New Years brings many events to the area including Christmas in the Village and Oakland's A Great Small Town Christmas!

January

The start of the new year can be one of the coldest and snowiest times of the year at Deep Creek. This makes it a perfect time to hit the slopes at Wisp Resort. Because of the colder temps, snow usually remains for the majority of the month. By January, the lake is usually frozen solid, making it a great time to go ice-fishing and snowmobiling. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also great ways to get out and explore the beauty of winter at the lake. The waterfalls at Swallow Falls State Park are also usually frozen over by this point, making beautiful ice formations.

February

This month is full of winter fun to enjoy. Stop by Oakland's Winterfest to see amazing ice carvings, take a ride in the horse-drawn sleigh, and shop from local vendors. The end of the month brings the annual Deep Creek Dunk! February is also known for its large amounts of snowfall in the area. President's Day Weekend is a great time to visit and hit the slopes or go tubing with the whole family. All kinds of winter fun can be found in February at the lake.
