Swallow Falls State Park- Swallow Falls State Park is a must! A fan favorite for locals and visitors alike, this four-season destination is a hit for those looking to spend some time in the great outdoors. Boasting Maryland’s highest free-falling waterfall, as well as a series of smaller waterfalls and charming banks along the Youghiogheny River, Swallow Falls State Park is the perfect place for hiking, biking, picnicking, and more.
New Germany State Park- Located in nearby Grantsville, New Germany State Park features ten miles of multi-use trails and a small lake for fishing, swimming, and non-motorized boating. Quieter than other state parks in the area, New Germany is a great place to reconnect with nature and get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Cranesville Swamp- Cranesville Swamp, a boreal peat bog located at the state line between Maryland and West Virginia, is a relic from another era- specifically, from the Pleistocene Epoch, or the time our last ice age. This swamp and the plants contained within it formed 15,000 years ago and remain perfectly preserved due to a frost pocket effect in the area allowing the swamp to remain cooler, and wetter than the surrounding areas.

This property is located on 60 acres of private land bordering over 200+ acres of protected Maryland Natural Conservatory in Oakland, MD just 10 minutes from McHenry, MD, Deep Creek Lake & WISP Resort. Splash Island- The first of its kind at Deep Creek Lake, the Splash Island at Will O’ the Wisp is a great way to combine family fun with fitness! This inflatable water course will have you slip, slide, and glide your way through obstacles that include a climbing wall, giant slide, and trampoline jump pads. When the summer days are long and hot, there is no greater place to cool off!
ASCI (Whitewater Rafting) – Locally known as “ASCI”, the Adventure Sports Center International is a man-made whitewater course on top of Wisp Mountain. Take a guided tour through the course with one mile of continuous rapids in a kayak, duckie, or raft. Plus, ASCI also provides guided rock climbing and rappelling experiences!
S.U.P. – Try the hottest new workout on the lake! Stand-Up Paddle Boarding originated with surfers in Hawaii and has traveled all the way across the country to Deep Creek Lake. By standing on the board, and using a paddle, riders propel themselves across the water in a leisurely fashion. Once you are on a board, you can experiment with your options from there; the boards can even be used as bases for yoga and fishing!
Kayaking- There is no better way to explore our lakes and rivers than by kayak! For thrill seekers, the Youghiogheny River and Cheat rivers are great options for white water rapids. But, if you are more into the serenity of flat water, consider an early morning ride through the many coves and inlets of Deep Creek Lake.
Lavender Farms – Pretty and perfumed, Deep Creek Lavender Farms is a great place to spend the day! This locally run farm showcases more than 1500 lavender plants with 15 distinct varieties of purple and white. Pick your own bouquet, enjoy the views, or stop by the shop for a selection of lavender products!
Firefly Farms – Located along the main street in Accident, Firefly Farms Creamery & Market represents a community of cheese makers dedicated to making excellent cheese and promoting sustainable operations. Stop by their market to sample some wine and cheese and learn more about the process of cheese making in western Maryland!
Deep Creek Cellars- Deep Creek Cellars, nestled along the countryside, produces several great varieties of wine, made using sustainable farming practices with an emphasis on natural techniques, wild yeast formation, and limited sulfites. Headed by a husband and wife team, this boutique winery keeps the focus on quality wine. There is a simple formula for happiness: drink wine, read books, and be happy! At Black Bear Wine and Words, this process is made simple. This dual wine shop and used book store is staffed by knowledgeable wine connoisseurs happy to help you make a few selections. Spruce Forest Artisan Village – Take a walk through the Spruce Forest Artisan Village, a series of charming log abodes situated side by side for visitors to travel between, interacting with artists, watching them craft, and purchasing hand-crafted artwork. Farmer’s Market – From to June to October, head to downtown Oakland from 10am to 1pm on Wednesday and Saturdays to check out the Mountain Fresh farmer’s market and our collection of offerings from our farmers, artisans, cooks, and bakers.
Garrett County Museum of Transportation – Historic carriages, sleighs, buggies, and other automobiles are displayed in two floors of transportation exhibits. A perfect pit-stop when exploring historic downtown Oakland, the Museum of Transportation also features a variety of exhibits on our local state parks and the cultural heritage of western Maryland.
Garrett County Historical Museum – Explore more than 200 years of Garrett County history in one afternoon. The museum has several themed rooms including the B&O Room, Victorian room, Military Room, and more. Highlights include a fully operational replica B&O train that was featured in the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893 and an exhibit detailing Garrett County’s role in the Civil War.
Our Town Community Theatre – Our Town Theatre is a small brick theater located in downtown Oakland. Hosting a variety of productions, and the occasional open mic night, a visit to Our Town Theatre is a great way to support the small town arts scene in a quaint and charming setting!
Arcades – For kids and adults alike, Deep Creek is a great place to hit the arcades. Smiley’s Fun Zone, Funland, and Fun Unlimited all offer arcades, games, and more for anyone looking to partake is some street racing or zombie shooting. For those 16 and older, Fun Unlimited even has a wide selection of vintage games from the 1960s and 1970s!
Mini Golf – It’s a vacation classic for a reason! A favorite among families, groups of friends, and couples, mini golf is a sure crowd pleaser. At Deep Creek, there are great mini golf courses to choose from. Come play at Funland or at Smiley’s Fun Zone- both conveniently located along central Route 219/Garrett Highway

Go to Smiley’s for bumper boats, go carts, mini golf, laser tag, mini bowling, batting cages and more! Mountain Coaster – With 3,500 feet of downhill twists and turns, get ready to dip, twist, and careen down the mountain in a fun new way with the Mountain Coaster at Wisp Resort! Billed as a “gravitational hybrid” between an “alpine slide and a roller coaster,” this ride is a perfect suit for kids (3 years and older) and adults! Equipped with a hand brake in each cart, you are entirely in control of the cart’s momentum and are free to go as fast or as slow as you like.
Ropes Course/Zip lines – How much fun does the ‘Chipmunk Challenge’ sound? How about the ‘Spider Monkey Adventure’ or the ‘Flying Squirrel Canopy Tour’? These three ropes courses at Wisp Resort are designed to challenge climbers of all ages (6+) to series of zip lines, cargo nets, and more. The trained guides will help you get the adventure started.
Scenic Chair Lift – There may not be any snow on the mountain, but that doesn’t have to keep you away from the chair lifts at Wisp Resort! Grab your camera and a friend (or two!) for a lift up the mountain to behold spectacular sweeping panoramas of the mountainside overlooking Deep Creek Lake. Flight 93 Memorial – The Flight 93 National Memorial, located at the site of the crash of United Airlines Flight 93, is a touching memorial to the victims of 9/11 and to the bravery the men and women of Flight 93 displayed in their final moments. On-site, there is a concrete and glass visitor center and the white marble Wall of Names aligned beneath the path of Flight 93.
