June is Great Outdoors Month! It’s safe to say that Deep Creek Lake & Garrett County have plenty of great outdoors to explore, with eight state parks, Maryland’s largest freshwater lake, the tallest free-falling waterfall, Maryland’s Highest Point…did we leave anything out? An afternoon adventure is just what the doctor ordered now that school is out and summer is in!
Take a Hike
No, really, take a hike. Between the state parks and other recreation areas, there’s almost an endless amount of hiking and exploring. Some of our favorite spots include Swallow Falls State Park (hello, tallest waterfall!), New Germany State Park, Deep Creek Lake State Park, Garrett State Forest, Herrington Manor State Park, visiting Maryland’s Highest Point and Fork Run Recreation Area. Hiking can be a great activity for all ages and fitness levels, and most of the areas have varying levels of trail difficulty. There’s even a 6 mile trail connecting Herrington Manor to Swallow Falls, with Garrett State Forest and the Rock Maze in the middle! If you’re looking for a killer lake view, hike up to the fire tower at Deep Creek Lake State Park, climb up to the top, and take in a bird’s eye view of Deep Creek Lake.
Make a Splash
Deep Creek Lake is Maryland’s largest freshwater lake, and one of the top attractions to our area. On any given day during the summer, you can find people on the water enjoying boats, stand-up paddleboards, jet skis, kayaks, canoes, being towed on tubes, wake-boarding, wake-surfing, water-skiing, and swimming. Deep Creek Lake has a unique shape, creating many coves, several of which are no-wake coves, meaning no fast boats or jet-skis. No-wake coves are perfect for the non-power lake variety of activities and relaxing. There is a sandy beach area at Deep Creek Lake State Park, too, which gives you all the joys of sand and sun without all that salt. No matter how you enjoy the lake, we strongly encourage…no we insist, you have to jump in.
Capture the Moment
While we definitely encourage you to unplug for a while on vacation, don’t forget to take all the pictures you can of everything you experience and see. Garrett County and Deep Creek Lake are a photographer’s dream, from dreamy sunsets over the water to perfectly carved rivers, there’s so much to see and share. Even if most of them don’t make the Instagram cut, you’ll have the perfect set of candid moments to remember your trip and the great outdoors of Deep Creek Lake.
