The month of March brings the transition from winter into spring with plenty of activities to explore Deep Creek Lake. We've all heard the saying, "March comes in like a lion, out like a lamb." Well, the first weekend of March started out like a lion. But after a few days in, we're getting a taste of beautiful spring weather. With the first day of spring just over a week away, its hard to tell what the weather may bring. Nevertheless, we are still excited for sunshine and being outdoors!
Spring at Deep Creek is a fun time because you can experience great outside activities without the summer crowd. Here are some of our favorite things to do during spring. Whether you visit for a weekend, or even for a day trip, take advantage of the great outdoors at the lake!
Kayaking
Getting out on the water is one of the first things you think about when you come to the lake. After a long cold winter, we can’t wait to take the kayak out on a beautiful spring morning. Kayaking is a great way to explore the coves of Deep Creek Lake while you de-stress during your stay. You can kayak on the lake or at the nearby Youghiogheny and Cheat rivers. All three areas offer beginner to challenging kayaking experiences. Many stores in the area offer kayak rentals. Some even provide delivery and pick-up services so you don’t have to stress about how to move it to a different area of the lake.
Fishing
There are many great fishing spots in Garrett County. From Deep Creek to New Germany State Park, and several surrounding areas, you are sure to have a good time. There are a variety of fish in Garrett County waterways. Hiking
In addition to kayaking and fishing, hiking is also a popular amenity around the lake. Garrett County and the Deep Creek Lake area has over 32 trails of both land and water trails. You can even hike along the trails by the waterfalls in Swallow Falls State Park. A list of trails, maps, and descriptions can be found online at Garrett Trails.
Visit the Farmer’s Market
The winter and spring 2020 indoor farmer’s market in Oakland runs every other Saturday from 11 am – 1 pm. Stop by for some local produce, meat, eggs, baked goods, jellies, homemade crafts and more! Catch Some Live Music
It’s never hard to catch some live music around Deep Creek Lake. After exploring the area, end the day with some drinks and live music. Popular places like the Honi Honi and Sipside Lounge often have live music on the weekends. Sometimes, there will be music multiple times a weekend. A list of events can be found on the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce’s website which includes great weekend activities.
