It’s no secret the effect that nature can have on a person; it inspires, it teaches, it lends ways to growth, and for the children of our local Crellin Elementary School, it serves as a literal classroom and source of instruction. Read more!
Espousing an educational philosophy known as “place-based learning,” Crellin Elementary takes its cue from the ecological landscape of Garrett County to showcase a curriculum that embraces the rich natural bounty of the area. The school borders six acres of streams and forests where the students can – and do – go outside to study the native biosphere through lessons on everything from steam pollution and plant health to birds, bears, and butterflies.
The school even features a working barnyard and garden, known as Sunshine Farm, that serves to impart important agricultural skills and provide food that the students can actually consume
Here, students learn the art of animal husbandry and each school day begins with the collection of eggs from the chicken coup- it’s this unique approach to education that makes Crellin Elementary School a stand-out institution, nationally and internationally.
As you explore the Deep Creek area, take inspiration from the students at Crellin. Embrace the energy of Garrett County and turn your forays into nature into forays into learning. Focus on mindful discovery, seek out the lessons all around, and ask questions of yourself and others: It’s the Crellin way.
